From race video to clear coaching decisions
Learn how to configure a race, mark the video, measure the start and turns, read pacing and stroke metrics, save the result and share useful feedback with the swimmer.
Quick start
1. Configure the race
Select the pool, event type, stroke and distance. Choose the account that should receive the analysis, then add the athlete’s display name.
2. Upload the video
Choose the race video from your device. Use the timeline and 0.04-second step controls to stop on the exact frame.
3. Mark the race
Follow Set Next from Start to Finish. Then mark the start breakout, every turn and the stroke-tempo segments required for the selected event.
4. Review and save
Check Results, pacing, turns and stroke metrics. Add race details and Coach Feedback, then save the analysis or export a report.
Race setup and account selection
The fields above the video define both the analysis plan and who receives the saved result.
| Field | What to choose | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Upload | A race video stored on your device. | The video is analysed locally in the browser and is not stored with a saved analysis. Select the same file to continue a restored draft; use Reset before switching to another race video. |
| Pool | LCM 50m, SCM 25m or SCY 25y. | Changes the unit, available events, turn locations and distance calculations. |
| Event type | Individual or Relay. | Builds the correct marker plan. Relay results are not added to an individual PB. |
| Stroke | Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly or Individual Medley when available. | Filters the valid distances and applies the correct stroke or medley plan. |

Race markers
Markers connect a distance in the race to the current video frame. Place them in race order: Start first and Finish last. The system prevents a later distance from being stored before an earlier marker on the video timeline.
Required markers
These define the minimum analysis for the selected event. Results shows the completed count, for example 0/17 or 17/17.
Optional markers
Longer events can hide extra detail points. Turn Optional markers on when detailed 25m or phase-level analysis is needed; turn them off for a faster compact workflow.
A marker can be placed with Set Next or by selecting its marker card. Pause on the exact frame whenever accuracy is more important than speed.
Analysis modules
Start analysis
Enter reaction time manually, set the breakout frame and confirm breakout distance. The system calculates Time Out, breakout velocity, 15m time and 15m velocity. Reaction time is context for the coach and does not change the video-based final result.
Turns analysis
Review all turns together or one at a time. Set Touch, Push and Breakout in that order. Race Analysis calculates approach/exit evolution, wall time, underwater time, total Touch-to-Breakout time and underwater velocity. The evolution window runs from 5 units before the wall to 15 units after it when those markers are available.
Pacing info
Shows lap time and velocity across available 25, 50 and 100 splits plus cumulative checkpoints. Long-distance events can use a compact view when optional markers are hidden.
Stroke metrics
Enter cycle count for each measured segment or use Tap tempo while the video is playing. The table calculates tempo, SR, DPS, stroke index and the segment’s share of total time.
Results
Summarises every visible checkpoint with cumulative time, interval split and velocity. Start must be set before cumulative From Start values can be calculated correctly. The final race result is Finish video time minus Start video time.
Comparison
Loads two or three compatible saved races and aligns their result, splits, velocity, SR, DPS, stroke index and turn values in one comparison table.
| Metric | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Time (cum) | Elapsed race time from the Start marker to the checkpoint. |
| Split / lap time | Time between two measured checkpoints. |
| Velocity | Measured distance divided by measured time, shown in metres per second. |
| Tempo | Seconds required for one stroke cycle. |
| SR | Stroke cycles per minute. |
| DPS | Distance travelled per stroke cycle, shown in centimetres. |
| Index | Velocity × DPS / 100; a combined mechanical indicator, not a standalone quality score. |
| Split % | The segment’s proportion of final race time; available after Finish is marked. |
Saving, Personal Best and shared access
Race details
Select SpeedChart gender, add the competition and enter the race date. Gender selects the correct reference model; competition and date provide useful record context.
Save requirements
Start and at least one additional marker are required to save a draft. A completed individual result and valid race date are required for PB synchronisation. A record without Finish remains a draft; a record with a valid result is saved as complete.
Assigned analysis
A connected athlete can open the saved result and Coach Feedback in read-only mode. Select Reset to close that result and begin a new editable analysis.
Saved library
Saved records keep measurements and calculated data, but not the original video file. Select the same local video again when visual review is required.
| Account level | Typical Race Analysis access |
|---|---|
| Registered Free | Video analysis within the current allowance and access to analyses assigned to the account. Pro export, saving and comparison remain locked. |
| Pro | Reports, PDF, private saving, athlete assignment, saved library and compatible race comparison. |
| Administrator | Pro tools, all permitted saved analyses and a separate workflow for publishing reviewed reference races. |
Saved library, comparison and publishing
Saved-analysis library
Search by athlete, load an available record and delete only records you are allowed to edit. Coaches and athletes may see different records according to connection permissions.
Compare races
Choose up to three races with the same event. My races and the AnalysisSwim reference database are separate sources. Clear comparison removes the comparison table without deleting any saved race.
Administrator publishing
Publish to site creates a separate reviewed or verified reference copy. The administrator can add the source label and URL, import prepared JSON and review marker, start, turn and stroke data before publishing.
Private original
Publishing a reference does not turn the user’s original analysis into a public record. The private source and the reference copy remain separate records.
SpeedChart models available now
The first verified catalogue covers individual Freestyle races in a 50-metre pool. Male and Female models are stored separately, and the correct category must be selected before feedback is generated.
50m Freestyle
- LCM · Individual
- Male: 19.0–30.6 seconds
- Female: 22.0–33.6 seconds
100m Freestyle
- LCM · Individual
- Male: 46.0–75.0 seconds
- Female: 51.0–80.0 seconds
200m Freestyle
- LCM · Individual
- Male: 1:43.0–2:12.0
- Female: 1:53.0–2:22.0
How the SpeedChart comparison works
1. Match the race
The system selects the model using pool course, stroke, distance and gender. It never silently substitutes a different category.
2. Match the performance level
The model is selected for the swimmer’s final time. When the result falls between two chart rows, their cumulative percentages are interpolated.
3. Compare measured phases
Actual cumulative times are converted into a percentage of the swimmer’s total race. Only markers measured in the video are compared; missing athlete times are not invented.
4. Review the draft
The engine identifies the strongest phase, the largest proportional loss and a suggested training focus. A coach reviews or edits the text before saving it for the athlete.
Marker coverage
Source charts contain more checkpoints than a normal video workflow. Race Analysis uses exact intersections and combines the reference percentages across any skipped checkpoints.
| Race | SpeedChart checkpoints | Comparison rule |
|---|---|---|
| 50m | 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50m | Compare measured markers; combine missing 5m intervals. |
| 100m | 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 100m | Preserve the turn and compare only exact video checkpoints. |
| 200m | 15, 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175, 200m | Evaluate the start, each 25/50m phase and the finish where measured. |
Stroke Rate, DPS and speed
Stroke Rate (SR)
Stroke Rate shows cycle frequency. A higher rate is useful only when it maintains or increases speed; rate alone is not a quality score.
Distance Per Stroke (DPS)
DPS shows distance travelled per cycle. A high DPS is not automatically better when cadence and race speed are falling.
In the current version, SR and DPS are interpreted as an indicative within-race trend. They help explain how speed changed, but they are not compared with an external “ideal” range until a compatible verified reference is available. A technical trend is shown only when cycle counts are available for at least two usable segments.
- Speed down, DPS down, SR up: pattern consistent with a shorter stroke under fatigue.
- Speed down, DPS stable, SR down: lower cadence may be contributing to the loss.
- Speed stable, DPS down, SR up: cadence may be compensating for a shorter stroke.
- Speed up, DPS stable, SR up: acceleration is mechanically effective.
Personal Best and Coach Feedback
Personal Best
PB remains a real athlete result. It is synchronised only for a completed individual race with a valid date, a linked athlete account and the required connection permission. Relay and incomplete results remain in Race Analysis without changing individual PB history.
Coach Feedback
The generated text and model version are saved with the Race Analysis. If markers, result, SR, DPS or gender change, the draft must be generated again before saving. The coach can edit the proposed text before it is shared with the athlete.
A coach can assign an analysis or update an athlete’s PB only when the active connection grants the required permission. The athlete receives the saved feedback with the analysis.
